PostSubject: I seems PKC are not needed this year   Sat Jul 11 2009, 18:43

On reading the schedual of the race it seems PKC are not needed this year ???
River Lee Drowning Low Competitors Rescue boats (6 No RIBs) and Sub-aqua divers (3No)
Notice to Mariner

Starting sequence
Civil Defence
Cork Sub-Aqua Club
Port of Cork Company
Lee Swim Organising Committee)
As the ribs could not go upriver last year and the Kayaks did all the work PKC and its volinteer members does not get a mention in the ECHO or the official documents relating to the race.
I wonder how the race would run without the Kayaks????

Evan- the reason your not on the website is no one came to the meetings and I presume the web/PR guy thought you weren't coming. I will fix that. And lots more kayakers needed this year as the Dive club pissed off. Very Happy

And I don't know where you copied that from as I have the full safety plan and the Club is in it. (I know coz I had to re-write some of it).

On the other aspect if the club wants to get more involved, that is also not a problem. Head billing in the future. Very Happy

Are you not a PKC member ??? and were you at the meeting, dave was away so could not attend.
I got that off a safety document that you sent to dave ??
Alan is trying to sort out details for Sat and is getting nowhere fast,
1) where do we park
2) is there a shuttle for us to get to the start
3) What time is the Safety briefing etc etc
We need to post answers on the site for those people doing rescue
so contact Alan asap

As Safety Officer, I am a little concerned as to the lack of information floating around about our role in supporting the race.

This needs to be addressed, and fast.

Yes it is on

What you need to know is that there will be 300 swimmers in 30 swimmer waves. 4 ribs and 1/2 jetskis as the second line in the water.

I am the event controller on the day and will be based at the control unit. My number is 086-0801728.

As far as I am aware Alan will be the head kayaker on the water with Evan as Back up. Safety briefing is at the Clarion at 12pm for them. Meeting at the club at 13:30 for boats and gear.

PARKING: is at the custom house quay at the end of the race. Boats can be dropped at the North Mall distillary Car Park earlier (1:30ish) and then car shuttle back there.

Swimmers start at 3pm but the gangway into the water will be full with swimmers by 14:45/14:50 so that is your last get on time.

The Civil Defence will provide a kayak laision officer with radio comms. Not sure if he will be in a kayak also. Otherwise the boats will provide you with comms up and down the river.

Every Rib will have a First aider/ emergency medicial first responder on board and in my next post I will post the paddlers SOG.

The swim goes down the North Channel and around by the port of Cork sign and up to the floating pontoon in front of the Clarion. There will be a Rib stationed at the Port of Cork sign at the convergence of the channels to catch swimmers swimming straight on.

When the swimmer has finished at the pontoon the will swim back 60m to the steps at the custom house quay. (the kayak get out for the ocean to city). 2km race and 60m to get out.

Role of the kayaker to follow

PostSubject: Standard Operating Guidelines   Wed Jul 15 2009, 10:41

Groups of swimmers wearing bright coloured caps will be in the water. The aim of the water safety is to prevent casualties and injuries and failing that, deal with any and all casualties in a prompt and safe manner.

The make up and the deployment will be up to the head kayaker on the day.

If a swimmer indicates (ie with fist in the air, floating on back) that they are in distress or if a swimmer appears to be in distress or 'lost', then the kayaker should approach with care. Be aware that there are other swimmers in the water behind you also.

On appoach, assess what is the problem. Address the swimmer and only if required move into contact. (first your safety then the swimmers).

If the swimmer is swimming the wrong direction then correct them. If the swimmer is tired or having a cramp then give them the nose of the boat to hold (if required). If the cramp or fatigue persists then call a rib to remove them. Sign to be arranged but usually paddle aloft in the air.

If the swimmer is injured or not fully consious in anyway then the swimmer needs to be removed. Call a Rib to do so. This may require you to manouver out of the swimming group.

If a swimmer wants out of the water then call a Rib, do not let them climb a ladders or set of steps somewhere unknown.
This is so I can account for all the swimmers. The head Kayaker will inform me when all the kayakers have left the water and are accounted for.

There are 3 Ambulance landing points:
Shandon Bridge steps (cornmarket street)
Patricks Quay/ Patricks Bridge
Custom House Quay/ Eammon De Valera Bridge

These are the Water rescue landing points designated by the HSE. (there will be four ambulances on site and the HSE ambulance will be called by control as required).

In the event of an 'act of god' or a major emergency incident the all out order will/ can only be given on my say so. You will know when that is as the mushroom cloud will be visiable and then it is get everyone without panicing out of the water.

Anything else you need? Most of this is in the safety plan (with the typo). The most important bit is the volunteers party which is not organised yet and is usually a month or so later.

Also on the race can not happen without a large presence from the club. Of that I am sure your all aware. This is the country's second largest swim and one of the premier sporting events in the the City.
This does not mean the Charity is not grateful or unaware of the efforts of the club. The opposite is true.

When the last event controller stepped back, I was asked to take it on partly my experience in the various areas but also due the the amount of importance they place on water rescue and the kayakers on the day.

So while I was unaware till last saturday of any issues in regards the details for the club (lots of other headaches with an event of this size) please feel free to post here or ring me or e-mail me with any questions no matter how large or small. Just on saturday the 18th if my phone is busy try again. :-)

Meet Sat 1:30 @ Phoenix Club Site. You can get a boat and gear then.
