Groups of swimmers wearing bright coloured caps will be in the water. The aim of the water safety is to prevent casualties and injuries and failing that, deal with any and all casualties in a prompt and safe manner.
The make up and the deployment will be up to the head kayaker on the day.
If a swimmer indicates (ie with fist in the air, floating on back) that they are in distress or if a swimmer appears to be in distress or 'lost', then the kayaker should approach with care. Be aware that there are other swimmers in the water behind you also.
On appoach, assess what is the problem. Address the swimmer and only if required move into contact. (first your safety then the swimmers).
If the swimmer is swimming the wrong direction then correct them. If the swimmer is tired or having a cramp then give them the nose of the boat to hold (if required). If the cramp or fatigue persists then call a rib to remove them. Sign to be arranged but usually paddle aloft in the air.
If the swimmer is injured or not fully consious in anyway then the swimmer needs to be removed. Call a Rib to do so. This may require you to manouver out of the swimming group.
If a swimmer wants out of the water then call a Rib, do not let them climb a ladders or set of steps somewhere unknown.
This is so I can account for all the swimmers. The head Kayaker will inform me when all the kayakers have left the water and are accounted for.
There are 3 Ambulance landing points:
Shandon Bridge steps (cornmarket street)
Patricks Quay/ Patricks Bridge
Custom House Quay/ Eammon De Valera BridgeThese are the Water rescue landing points designated by the HSE. (there will be four ambulances on site and the HSE ambulance will be called by control as required).
In the event of an 'act of god' or a major emergency incident the all out order will/ can only be given on my say so. You will know when that is as the mushroom cloud will be visiable and then it is get everyone without panicing out of the water.
