As I said to a few of you on Sunday morning - if the planned trip will involve a variety of locations and runs, and some of those are suitable for the likes of me - then I'm definitely interested in going too.

Although I will try, I might not make it to any of the planned meetings - but just maybe keep it in mind when planning/discussing - particularly when gauging numbers etc.

Thanks.

For those that weren't able to make it.

There was a good discussion of the options available.
There are 16 names down as being interested, mixed abilities. If you posted any interest in going on this thread you were included in the numbers.

We had a lot of options and people are going to research the posibility of going with the numbers and experience we have. Individuals volunteered to get prices for going with different options.

Denis Quelly is checking out The Kayaking Company
Sean Lynn is checking out Gene 17
Conor Lehane is checking out ICU
Evan Roberts is checking out going with the Liverpool Kayaking Club on their annual trip
I'm checking our Kayaking.ie

If you know of any other companies please research them and come along to McCarthy's bar at 19.30 on Thursday 11th December (before the pool session) where we are going to see if any particular option suits.

At this stage there is no commitment for 16 to go together - we are just seeing the options.

Hey just a quick run through of what was said ath the meeting yesterday evening, It looks like going to France in conjunction with liverpool Kayak Club, seems to be the most popular suggestion. The dates are ROUGHLY the last week of July the first week of August. The cheapest option is drive over ( 3/4 in a car) and Denis can accomodate extra boats. We currently have 16 I think interested but this may decline due to suitability of dates. If the dates don't suit an individual the Various companies (kayak.ie, jean17, ICU etc) will be running courses and a trip will cost Around 950 euro plus travle expenses. So if the dates suit try organise yourself a group contact Evan/Paul for exact dates and book accordingly. This is not an official club trip so travel insurance is your own personel choice.

A rough calculation is 550 + food & drink. That's 3 sharing a car (ferry, fuel, tolls), insurance (extreme sport cover 50 euro approx), camping, etc. I spent approx 675 in 2011 (not slumming it)

I have gone over to France 7 or 8 times now, Irish Ferries is IMHO the best option with space to move around, two lge bars, entertainment, cafe's, restaurants etc on board. I personally found (Ryan Air style) Celtic link / Stena option to be mind numbingly boring (16 hour trip) and no cheaper when I've compared prices the last couple of years.

In 2011 we stopped to stretch the legs every two hours for ten minutes. Longer stop at lunch etc, its 1000km down.

Have a look at my previous post re locations etc and click to check out Seamus pics. The place is picture postcard stuff

I have done some calks and flying Dublin to Geneva ,3hr drive car hire and getting your gear (boat tent etc ) across and a weeks camping is 400 euro plus food ,drink and fuel.
In the summer you can fly Cork -Nice or Dublin Grenoble but i cannot get prices now.
its as cheap to fly and pick up a car as to go by ferry and drive down and much faster
Talk soon and watch Seamus photos and videos
