PostSubject: Protect your Ears   Thu 12 Jun 2014, 10:47 am

Shared this a few places. I know ye've all heard it all before.
But its no harm to share my recent troubles.
I also know some of you guys have had ear troubles. So hopefully this can provide a cheaper option for earplugs. Ask to see mine if you want a look at the quality.
If you are paddling in winter, or spending alot of time under water, be it freestyle, surf, you are a little unstable, this might save you the troubles i'm having or others have had.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Exostosis,
What a Dose-s!!

Hey Folks, I know anyone paddling a while has heard the "you should wear earplugs story". And I know ye all go yeah, one day i'll get earplugs. But you won't.
Well, I think ye should and here's why...
I'm also now afflicted with the early stages of exostosis.
http://magicseaweed.com/news/surfers-ear-an-inconvenient-truth/6276/

Any of you who spend any great deal of time in the water will prob come down with symptoms. Its caused by water getting in your ear, and cold wind can also be a cause.
I caught it early, I have no hearing loss yet, just water getting trapped in my ear, which is annoying and sometimes painful. And can be lodged for days. I've had no ear infections yet, but if it gets worse, I can expect both hearing loss and infections. Yok!

And if that occurs, it will involve a painful surgery. Dose-s!

I picked me up some custom plugs. And they didn't break the bank. They are comfy, look cool, don't cost too much, I can hear fairly well with them. If you are in Cork, there is a lovely lady here who will come to your house or wherever a group organises, check you ears for symptoms, take your ear impressions and you get plugs in a few weeks.
If you are elsewhere, i'm sure there is someone near you.
Aisling also has the plugs and a fair few boaters already afflicted are now rocking them too. You get a choice of colours. How awesome is that.

Get plugs, custom or off the shelf, anything is better than nothing.
Use them.
Swim plugs start from 10( i used use these, but found them annoying, hence I stopped using them, hence ear troubles )
You can get better shaped ear plugs for between 20 and 30
Custom plug details listed below.
Encourage others to do the same.

The Earplugs I have are from a local Audiologist. ( Its always nice to support local )
She came to my house to mould my ears, do a quick check for any ear problems. And sent the moulds off to have earplugs made.
The visit and the plugs cost me 50, and they will keep the details on file for 3 years in case I need replacements. Which are 30 if i need them, since no moulding needs to be done.
After the moulding process, I received my earplugs a few weeks later.
Her name is Mary Duggan, she's a local qualified audiologist, there are 3 Kayakers I know of in Cork using her plugs who are all happy with them.
086 7778818 is her contact number.

No worries Alan,
I feel a bit foolish for not getting these a long time ago, waiting until problems developed.
I'm just sharing my pain and hoping others don't end up with it.
Might be worth getting a few in the club together if more were interested. Get them all done at once.

Would it be a thought to get her to come to the club house on a Thursday if that suited her?

I've been using Doc's Proplugs for a good while but think I lost them recently. Sad I might be interested in getting a custom made set as well.
