Hi Folks,
Cork To Cobh Charity Swim 2013 is taking place on Saturday 14th September from the Clarion Hotel, Lapps Quay, Cork to the Deepwater Quay, Cobh. THIS IS NOT A CLUB TRIP/CLUB ORGANISED EVENT, however some Phoenix members have supported this event previously.

This is a long distance event and the paddler is on their own with the swimmer for periods of time during the event, so not an event for beginners really, especially if the weather conditions are not great. Please see the email below from Fergus for more details. If people are interested in helping out please post up so I can give Fergus an idea of numbers.

Cork To Cobh Charity Swim 2013 Kayak / Boat Instructions

Cork To Cobh Charity Swim 2013 Kayak / Boat Instructions

Support Kayakers
Due to the length of the swim each swimmer will require an individual kayaker.

Kayaker / Boat Duties

Kayakers duties :-
• Paddle with designated swimmer
• Provide direction for swimmer
• Carry swimmers drink bottle / food
• Signal to Rib / Boat if swimmer requires
assistance (kayakers do not provide
rescue)

Rib / Boat duties
• 1 Rib in Lead, 1 Rib with last swimmer
• Intermediate Ribs provide safety / rescue
support if required.
• Provide support to Kayakers

This is a good opportunity for kayakers to meet other kayakers, make contacts and enjoy a leisurely day on the water … all for a good cause !

Safety
Safety is key to this event and a full event Safety Plan will be issued in due course to all entrants.

You are required to read this and make yourself aware of all its recommendations.

I'll be there -anybody planning on going should be prepared for up to 5 hours in the boat and being on your own, potentially in tricky conditions in places.

It is a good day though - very impressive to see the swimmers cover that distance, a bit of cramp in the boat is nothing in comparison.

Is anybody else around for this? Fergus was onto me again and they are short kayakers, so he would be grateful for any more help.

We will be having a beginners' session at the club house this weekend and will be looking for some eager helpers there as well - details to follow.
