I was considering getting a camera for kayaking.I know the obvious choice
would be the gopro but I wondered if anyone had had any experience with
the Sony Action cam

i had battery and card issues with my first one. replaced the battery for 20 quid and bought a class 10 sd card and worked a dream since! you have to buy a class 10 card of any size for the files GoPro record. i made the mistake of buying a cheap memory card and the camera killed it.

Not true, minimum class is 4, I run mine on a class4 32gb, zero problems to record, its a good card though. Alan get into Argos, http://www.argos.ie/static/Product/partNumber/5636187.htm you wont find cheaper.

i picked up a new housing and a battery backpac for half price in Argus...the HD2 is really cheap....
I had a small issue last sat. with mine and lost some footage...it may have been the cold affecting the battery...other than that fogging is a problem...you must use inserts to clear that up....once they are in its fine.

wrong. class 10 is whats recommended globally for HD video with an absolute bare minimum of 4. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Secure_Digital scroll down to speed class rating) the compression speeds of class 10 reduce grain on the videos, theres not much on it from GoPro but its there. also the GoPro has to stop and start less to save the video. GoPro themselves only sell class 10 cards.

another point, put time into editing your videos, once its up its there for a while/forever, you want to still be proud of you video way down the line. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Comparison_of_video_editing_software)

thanks

yes it does work. all sd cards work, but if your shelling out for high performance hd camera it makes sense to have a high performance card. plus you left out the large chunk of that comment explaining why it was better.

well I'm biased anyway, i do film in college where we're drilled into striving for ridiculously high production values so I'm always gonna save that bit more and fork out for the higher end products, ill be using my equipment to make a living like.

anyway the main point of this post is GoPro or go home! contour and sony action cam only exist to ride on GoPro's coat tails.

get the go pro, everything else is a copy of it, class 4/6and 10 cards will all work, any class will do for photos but video quality much better with class 10, go pro will fog up without anti fog inserts but i hear tell a beer mat cut into strips will do the same job as the inserts (i have not tried this yet ) .cold weather will drain all battery's 10 times faster than normal so buy a spare one, best of luck with whatever one you buy..

What the beer mats? No only started using in late november/early december. The footage is perfect as lomg as you dont open your camera until your finished it. If you open the case youll need to replace the mats. They are a one time use only thing.

Havent tried it with the battery back pack but i presume you just cut the mats bigger and sticke them down either side of the camera. Also to stop water beading ob you lens as much lick it and then dip it in the watwr. It creats a film over your lens and helps the water run off.

The saliva thing is a divers trick, spit on the inside of the diving mask and rub it around with your finger. pale Then dunk the mask briefly in the water. The goal is to leave a thin layer of saliva on the inside of the glass. Helps stop the mask fogging up. Very Happy

By the way you can buy a spray of "industrial spit" also know as "defogging agent" in dive shops that does the same thing. Very Happy Very Happy
