PostSubject: Great Island Kayak race 2012   Thu 29 Nov 2012, 1:53 pm

Right folks, Just an advanced notice.

Micheal is away till next week so no more details till then, but the race will be on Sunday the 23rd of December. The tides are the limiting factor and why the race isn't on the usual time of midway between Christmas and the New year.

High water is listed as 13:43 and the start is at least two hours before. More details to follow next week as to the exact time. This allows for those traveling to make the journey.

The long range weather forcast can't be relied upon yet but this is a serious 25km+ race on the sea around the Great Island (Cobh, Co. Cork) in typical winter sea conditions. While you are always within 400m of the shoreline and egress, you will need to be self sufficient and able to self rescue. A list of minimum standards and kit will be issued soon. This is an EXPEDITION style race for the non high performance boater. The high performance boater will also be expected to carry the minimum kit list (details later).

More details next week.

This year’s Great Island Kayak Race will be on Sunday the 23rd of December. The tides are the limiting factor and why the race isn't on the usual time of midway between Christmas and the New Year. The details are below or contact me for further details;

Race Registration: 11:00-11:30
This includes mandatory kits and boat inspection.
Race briefing: 11:30 sharp!
Race Start: 11:45
High Water: 13:43
Cut off times:
Belvelley Bridge – 13:30 (dependant on direction of travel)
Whites Point – TBA (weather dependant)
Finish line – 16:15 (4.5 hrs.)

Directions:
Race registration will be at the Marlogue Inn car park, this is also the start and finish line (Slip way). Do not obstruct the slipway as this is in constant use. When traveling from Cork to the Great Island you follow the signs for Cobh, you travel the Fota road till you cross the Bellvelley Bridge (A landing point for egress from the race as well as a checkpoint) and turn left. Take the first left following the sign for Marlogue and follow the road along the sea. The road leaves the shoreline and heads up a hill. At the T junction turn right and straight away left again. Marlogue Inn is on your left. Enter and proceed to the car park. The race registration will be visible in the Car park.

The long range weather forecast can't be relied upon yet but this is a serious 25km+ race on the sea around the Great Island (Cobh, Co. Cork) in typical winter sea conditions. While you are always within 400m of the shoreline and egress, you will need to be self-sufficient and able to self-rescue, both in a boat in some form as well as the ability to make it to shore un-aided. This is an EXPEDITION race in winter on the sea and should not be underestimated. A minimum standard of paddling will be enforced as a safety precaution, contact me if you are unsure of your ability. As of today (19th Dec) the expected weather is a wind speed of 25 knots gusting to 39 knots SW. Air temp circa 10 deg with a near complete cloud coverage and minimal rainfall. Weather and conditions will be inspected pre-race registration and the results communicated at the race briefing.

Mandatory Kit (minimum):
A dry bag containing a change of clothes or thermal covering (bothy / Survival bag is an acceptable alternative or addition to a change of clothes). A mobile phone with the emergency number programmed in (given at race briefing). A whistle or another means of attracting attention (flare, flag etc). This does not include all legally required equipment such as PFD etc. The high performance boater will also be expected to carry the minimum kit list.

Essential Kit:
Fluids and nutrition, VHF radio, Sea Chart and a first aid kit.

Egress and Landing points will be;
Bellvelley Bridge
Ferry slip at cross river ferry
Whites point
Cuskinney
