I assume it was related to this: http://surfforecasting.magicseaweed.com/?p=1318 their model didn't deal well with sea-ice retreating to record levels at the artic and this messed with the numbers giving crazy swell predictions through the Atlantic.

It came up on one of the surfing forums recently, and amusingly raises issues around building models assuming that conditions in the past will remain the same into the future. Nerdsplurge ends.
