break away from the usual rivers?

http://www.irishwhitewater.com/river_guide/river.php?id=297

http://www.irishwhitewater.com/river_guide/river.php?id=253

all of what i linked are grade 3/4 rivers in munster. think it only fair for an advanced club trip every now and then on a different river to the usuals run with the entire club.

most of the planned trips over the winter were cancelled (or changed to surf in G/Town) due to lack of water in the rivers, now that we have water there seems to be nothing orgainised - well except for thursday club night oh and of course the support for all the charity events and swims. I'm sure i am not alone in thinking that i paid to join the club to paddle (rivers) with the club, not just to do the charity stuff or the sluice every thursday, so please can we get something planned - as in a river run?

OK RANT OVER..................................

As someone who is old enough to do all the trips i agree with joe. the over 16s rule is ridiculous! the juniors are some of the most talented paddlers we have. i know its passed off as insurance reasons but still. Talking to the tullow kayak club and balto kayak club lads a bit recently they have paddlers as young as 14 or 15 regularly running grade 4. where our whole club no matter what age is kept on level 2 and low to mid 3 rivers.

when this argument came up previously we were told we wern't experienced enough to run harder rivers yet we are never offered rivers that will get us the experience to required to run bigger rivers.
Kevin is a huge example of this. a year paddling for ucc has made his paddling ability progress a ridiculous amount and he is now without question one of the best paddlers in the club. this is due to them offering trips on harder rivers and not just the regular Upper Bandon, Sullane and surf trips.

If the trips are not offered to us we will end up paddling progressively harder rivers and improving ourselves without the club. the club instructors/committee then would give out to us like the last time we suggested this so basically we can't win here.

in regards to freestyle a quick comment is i think its unfair that freestyle is just treated as a thing we can do while we are waiting for a rescue i won't get into my rant on freestyle right now it will take way too long. another time.

Rant over for now... that should keep me quiet for a while

Lads you might find it surprising, but I don't disagree with you at all. Every year I have been on the committee similar things have come up, one point I will make is you can't rely on the committee to organise all your paddles.

I'm sure people would be amazed if they knew just how much time is spent organising the club as it is.

I have started a new topic to discuss this issue here, it would be great of ye could read my post and list your aims / demands / what's broken / how to fix Phoenix ideas there so that everyone has one topic to discuss the issue.

Thanks in advance.

Paul Heff

Ladís peer paddling is just that people paddling together itís up to whoever is organising the trip to decide who can go on it or not. If itís a peer paddle everybody looks after themselves. Like you rescue each other but there is nobody responsible for anybody else. All that changes when you bring in under 18s. With adults you can recommend not running something but itís up to them to run it. With under 18s you need to decide for them. Itís not their ability but what happens if something goes wrong. Then it becomes who is the most qualified paddler that is responsible if anything goes wrong. Iíve talked to some of the older lads from UCC about juniors on bigger rivers and none of them were comfortable to take them regardless of ability. Organised club trips to anywhere but the Sullane and smaller rivers like that are not practical as bigger rivers need heavy rain at least the day before if not the night before for a good level. Most of the instructors are out a couple of times a week between Monday Tuesdays and Thursday nights they all have families and other commitments. If they donít want to run rivers that should be their choice if they want to go sea kayaking because thatís what they like/prefer/are better at go with them itís a chance to learn something.
