And just in case you didn't know. The law here states that the driver is responsible for their load. So check it yourself. :-)

And boats (load) apparently only allowed over hang by a metre at either end of the car and three inches over the sides. Thanks to a baby Clio with a K2 arriving at a checkpoint awhile back.

Making sure that boats are well secured is all well and good but also make sure that the actual racks themselves are actually secured. AS a carload of us found out one day driving over speed bumps at a speed only to hear a big thud and to see the front rack hanging halfway down the windscreen. However the boats stayed perfectly attached to the roof racks Very Happy

That was a terrible accident alright.

Also, remember to loop the straps through the handles either side of a creek boat. Even a well secured creek boat can come loose from staps if not looped through the handles.

Travelling long distances make sure to check straps every so often. Even well tied straps loosen out.

But I think a roof rack coming loose is more likely to come loose rather than a well strapped boat. A lot of roof rack systems are flimsy. Better to have roof rails or a well screwed down roof rack to make your system bomb proof.
