PostSubject: Help! I need to repair my kayak   Fri 24 Sep 2010, 4:31 pm

Hi all

I'm looking for advice on repairing my kayak. Its Pyrahna M3 with a 100mm split in the lowest point at the bottom. The material is I have tried to weld it with a soldering iron but as the split is at the lowest point it catches everything and has opened up again. Does anybody have any advice for this type of repair anybody used a patch on these?

Haven't read the link posted above but,

Drill a small hole at each end of the crack, this will distribute the stress in the plastic and stop the crack propagating.

Cut a v-notch in the crack from end to end, not so deep that you go right through the boat.

Some people use donor plastic from inside the cockpit rim but if you don't want to take anymore plastic off your boat try using white cable ties. You could use coloured ones but I'm told that white is best.

Do not use a soldering iron!!! It is not meant for plastic welding.

Use a heat gun and plenty of patience to melt the cable tie into the crack in your boat.

there you go, ready to hit the water again.

Mickey Barry is fairly handy at plastic welding he might be able to help you out.

good luck,

Thanks for the help. I managed to get it sealed up with the heatgun and blowtorch spoon combo. Had it out this weekend on a rocky scrape on the Roughty and it managed to withstand the punishment so far!

If anybody wants to borrow the heatgun for a repair just ask.

had the same issue with my Nomad. that micheal caught me with, or sorry sold me. Put a big plastic patch over the hole and rivetted it in place with a washer on the inside to stop the rivets pulling through. Seal all the patch with a shitload of silicone or something similar. I used Sikaflex which is excellent in the marine enviroment. I used an old fish box for the patch and it has never leaked since.

I tried the heatgun and found that it cracked after a few uses.

Danny. I think that was a gascooker-spoon combo. Can still smell the burning flesh and hear Dave laughing.
