News just in from Jim Morrissey. Perfect timing to hone your fitness for the Ocean to City!

Inaugural Galway Bay Sea kayak Race Announcement.

The inaugural Galway Bay Sea Kayak Race is set to take place on Sunday 24th May 2009 (weather permitting) during the first weekend of the Volvo Ocean race Stopover Festival.

The aim is to to run a safe event that caters for all abilities, promotes sea kayaking, and contributes a visual maritime spectacle to the Ocean race stopover festival. The Volvo Ocean fleet is due to arrive Galway between Friday and Sunday 22-24th so excitement levels are expected high that weekend.

The race course will consist of laps of semi-sheltered inner Galway Bay (directly in front of city/docks). Comprehensive Rescue boat cover will be provided. Classes offered will cater for all abilities and include:

Novice Class including sit on tops (singles & doubles), approx 3km
Standard Sea kayak class (singles & doubles), approx 8-10km
Racing Sea Kayak Class (singles & doubles), , approx 12-14km

The race is planned to start from new dock area of Galway City at approx; 14:00hrs on Sunday 24th May 2009. Directions to follow. A limited number of racing boats/skis will be available for hire.

More details will be posted shortly.

To help guage potential race numbers & arrange appropriate numbers of safety cover boats, it would be helpful to send expressions of intent to participate to info@kayakmor.com , thank you.

Hope to see you in Galway

All the best

Jim Morrissey

Totally agree Pat. The lads from Galway have always supported us, so I'd be hoping to get up for the race myself.

PostSubject: Who''s Going   Mon May 18 2009, 20:57

Lads, this would make for a great day out, especially with so many doing the Ocean to City Race the following week.

Donal Clancy has offered to tow a trailer up, if there is demand.

Names so Far:

Laura Vaughan
Dave O'Leary
Donal Clancy
Pat Pierce (if available)
Don O'Brien (I presume, since he started the post)

People completing the Ocean to City that should be coming along

Kevin Leyne
Noel O'Flynn
Maurice Foley

This race is just for a bit of craic, so come on folks no excuses. Post here please so as we can make travel arrangments and also inform Jim Morrissey of numbers.

Sean, you'd want to chase up a boat with Rob Boland as a lot of the
sea-kayaks are out on loan for this and the Ocean to City race.

Check out Don's other post. They are allowing WWR boats in the race as well.

Be at the site Thurs night and we'll arrange spins

I have a spectrum sitting here at home. I haven't dropped back yet. Not the greatest boat to race in but let me know if you need it. I won't be at club thursday though.
