Current Weather Conditions - RE River Running

Ladies and Gentlemen,

Please utilise extra caution if thinking of running a river this weekend. As has been mentioned in a number of posts, there are serious risks running rivers after the weather we have had. As Danny mention's in the following post, most rivers are off the scale.

Anyone thinking of running rivers, should be aware of the increased risk of fallen trees, submerged debris, unstable ground etc.

There is good advice in the following topic, take note of Martin's post at 12:32am.

A few of my friends are running the Lower Bandon tomorrow from Bandon to Kinsale. I haven't been in my Inazone in 2 years , so I'm anxious to find out as much as possible before I go for the plunge again. Some of the guys in the group'll be paddling their sit on tops.

Is it literally a flat paddle all the way (bar the ripples at the chip van)? Any features worth noting?

I looked at some of the photos in the gallery- is that weir just above the get on?

Problem found and solved in 3 sessions (35 euro each). I would highly recommend this guy to anyone needing bodywork.

Hi,

I attended the beginners' course over the past two Saturdays and on the first Saturday (3rd Oct) I left a pair of boots in the container marked 'Fir'. At least I'm sure I did, there or in the back of Paul Heff's car?

If anyone has planked them somewhere please let me know. They've done a lot of miles but are still in great nick and I'd love to keep them.

They're brown Merrell boots with Vibram souls.

Really enjoyed the course. Hope to see ye out on a trip soon.

Howdy all,

Winter is coming, the river is still in low flow, but high waters should be returning soon.

An idea has formed to have a comp to see who can create the best playspot.

This will also make the weir easier to handle for those new to freestyle,

More details here:

Traditionally folks from UCC have built the wedge but now as its a comp its time to open it up to all.

A lot of people have been asking me about paddling gear, what do they actually need to get started? The club has all the gear you need EXCEPT Wetsuits.

A Wetsuit (€60+) is the first thing you need, stick to a 3mm wetsuit, anything thicker will make movement difficult. If you will only ever use it for kayaking, get a LongJohn (sleeveless) wetsuit (€80+). This allows your arms to move unhindered and will avoid your armpits being rubbed as you paddle. Use a rashvest / baselayer under the wetsuit ...

Ladies and Gentlemen,

Only 16 people have acknowledged their presence at the clubs Annual Club BBQ and River Trip on the 26th Sept. A surprisingly low number given the number of members we have.

Be advised that if you do not tell us you are going and turn up on the day, you will NOT get fed!!

This is because McCarthys Bar will have the food cooked for us when we arrive to avoid delay, and because after the recent kayak experience days they know how hungry us paddlers get.

The annual Blackrock to Cobh swim takes place this weekend. The name is misleading as it now begins at the Clarion Hotel. It is up to the individual swimmers this year to arrange their own kayakers for the swim.

I'm partaking myself in the safety side of it paddling with one of the swimmers who partook last year, however there are a few swimmers who have been unable to get a kayaker to assist. If they are unable to get a kayaker by Friday they will have to pull out of the race.
